Day 5: Shoes

I remember some advice given me by Joe Stretch: ‘Write about your obsessions’

I don’t actually know what I’m obsessed by till I put pen to paper and suddenly notice I’ve repeatedly returned to a certain place, person, feeling, time in my life. This piece is split into two parts, which are from different emotions but have similar themes, which come out in the obsessions! I have this obsession with rooms, with the way people use space to represent who they are. I also have this thing for shoes, which Sara has been echoing recently at Stirred, taking pictures of people’s shoes when they are on stage. The pairs of shoes, from much worn to shiny new, look absurdly eloquent.

Here it is, untitled:

Your precious muck electrified the room

Through our sleep, shared snooze and lost hours

Of you staring at a screen, living the lives

Of characters, make believe

Your wardrobe of shoes, their dumb tongues laced in

their packaging unwrapped

how many places

Did you plan to walk to that you required

Fifty pairs, never worn?

* * * * * * * * * *

We poster the walls, the Beatles stare us out

Our room a sea of sheets and pillows, the world

Strains and rises at the window, wave high

Cats become stalkers and cry at night

Collar bells jangling

like the phone we won’t pick up

Loving you is as matter of fact

as breakfast and cats, yet also unknown

Like the bed we haven’t swept under

You bend, reach, bring out marbles

Polished with your breath to a new glow

Shoes forgotten about for years, you put them on

And stand before me new shod,

your footsteps from a place I never knew.
