Day 13: Bridge

Here is what I wrote in John G Hall’s workshop today, although it is much edited. Among all of the stuff I wrote, I became interested in this character (I called her Jane) who witnessed a bridge burning down and it changed her. Here is it:

London Bridge is falling down….

The great bridge of London all burnt down

It was winter and after her voice

Had cried out the names of the flames

The ruins froze over, a giant’s crumbs

Iron man dust

She went screaming home

It is all cosy in the cold evenings

She doesn’t like the bus,

tramps sidle up to her

Chat about America.

She took his hand, dirt-under nails scrapped her palm

and they went dancing all night

She would follow him to the ends of the earth

Tap dancing each step

Then orbiting into ballet

The Milky way bridging them

He’d always loved the opera

They’d tete a tete then spin away

The stars gave voice to their ancestors

And carolled their histories

Above the bridges frozen ruins
