Day 18: Rennet

The air smells of buttered toast,

You make porridge and I eat a cheese baguette

The cat lolls in the sun, the patio a cup of wind and light

The cat is an alcoholic rolling in rum

Its small body an oven by mid-day

You check the packaging for animal rennet

and stroke the cat. The cat tells you animals don’t like to be eaten

Asides from the birds he chases

and you murmur reassurance

The mozzarella is rennet free so we eat it

with tomatoes and spinach. Olive oil pours like sand.

I want to buy a lemon tree for fourteen pounds

You tell me it is the kind of day where everyone buys a lemon tree

It’ll be cold tomorrow.
