Day 24: New flat

Yesterday slipped by me so I’m going to post two today. Here is the first which is just a short piece, kind of unfinished really, wasn’t sure how to end it.

New flat

We started here, by the bike shed

I hooked the radio up in the kitchen

And listened to jazz fm, Kiss and Key103

While making breakfast

The cat puddled around on the patio

And lay on your feet on sunny mornings

Rubbing its forehead against your toes

You both enjoy sun like it’s a scratch on the itch of skin

You both like the wind, and plant pots.

I line the living room window with cacti

A spiky, green fence against the outside

We spend three hours hanging pictures

Measuring the inches between a row of five

We hang both calendars, yours of the solar system

Mine of owls which uncannily eyes us on the coach

A holiday home

All white walled and paint smelling

Dust lines the wardrobe and you hoover it out

Summer flourishes by the windows

We begin spring again, starting with the cleaning

And ending with the beds of tulips flowering up

Their colour as surprising as waking

And being here. the radio plays

I hate to turn up out of the blue uninvited

But I couldn’t stay away, I couldn’t fight it

Three times in two hours. The air tastes

of sadness and baked beans.
