Sapphormation Festival Workshop

Bit of a follow up to the Sapphormation workshop, held a few weeks ago now.

We looked at such a variety of pieces that we couldn’t fit them all in! We managed to cover Elizabeth Bishop and Marilyn Hacker somewhat but there was much left untapped.

The free writing exercise used the words:

Bind; field; fragrant; willows; pearl

And we opened with a line from Sappho:

As a gale on the mountainside bends the oak tree

And here is an abridged version of what I wrote:

As a gale on the mountainside bends the oak tree

It sways it pulls it opens the ground

the sea floor is hard and wooden I walk along it

Slipping, I look down,

I’m dressing in a ballerina’s pearly tones

Picking flowers off the hard wooden floor.

We also tried constructing a 14 line poem, discussing ideas of what makes a sonnet a sonnet beforehand. That piece I’ve actually developed into something longer now. I also attended the Pussy Riot Flashmob which was ace, and Ladies What Munch. Cocktail of Sapphics ingredients below:

Stirred team hopes to be involved with next years Sapphormation!
