Disney: Rewrite

Every Friday coming up there will be a fresh post with a Sarah Maple Disney princess portrait and accompanying poem.

Here is Sarah Maple’s statement on her blog about the photographs:

‘This is my new Disney Princess series….after researching into them whilst I spent time in New York in 2010, I wanted to empower the princesses with the thought in mind that this would empower young girls. Tonight I went to see the amazing ‘Mis-representation’ film and the quote ‘you can’t be what you can’t see’ really inspired me. It’s what I wanted to do with this work. Girls, you can do anything.’

When Stirred workshop at Blank Media: equals exhibition went ahead two pieces were inspired by the Disney princess sequence. We are hoping to cover all the princesses with poetic rewriting responding to the photograph, so far we have:

Belle the football manager: Ben Willems

Sleeping Beauty the surgeon: Karen Little

Snow White the scientist: Becca Audra Smith

And the poems with the images will be delivered every Friday starting on the 18th October :D.

The Stirred quad is formed of Rebecca Audra Smith, Anna Percy, Jasmine Chatfield and Lenni Sanders.
