Lovely times at the 3MT, thanks so much to them for having us for our third birthday! There was cake there was poetry. And Gina wrote us a poem! Much chuffed, beautifully encapsulated:
make them honest!
I’m loving the progression to pummels. Thanks so much to everyone who read from the new people to the trusted regulars, Steph Pike and Elmi Ali giving us their best stuff in the poetry roulette style reading.
The poetry task included responding to phrases from Catechism: Poems for Pussy Riot. I’d spent the day reading Nadezhda Tolokonnikova’s open letter from prison so it was on my mind, and it felt right to be remembering them on the birthday. The task was to take the words in the balaclava as the starting line or inspiration for a short poem.
Eyes fixed upon the strange lips
the words of coercion
spilling from some dark, intimate place
institutionalised syntax now demented,
aimed to plant new ideas of old problems
deep in the minds of those listening.
The listeners, limited.
Fold away your beautiful thoughts
into the creases of your mind.
Never fear your words are art,
here does lie the sex of mind.
Narrow minds drive to and fro.
Anger, hatred’s seed they sew.
So fold away your beautiful thoughts
Warm to love of times to come.

* Fold away your beautiful thoughts from John Siddique’s poem, Thirst.
Next Stirred is the Monday 18th November, theme: Frankenstein.
