Spilt Ink: Livid Among the Ghostings

Why Waste The Ink?

In her poetic statement for why she writes, Anna Percy questions us and herself, ‘why waste the ink?’ This interrogation  opens the challenging, deeply necessary nature of her poetry. Her poems are wagons loaded with relics from her past, artifacts from present day life, they reveal in objects. Truisms includes phone boxes, bagpipes, seaweed, lemonade and stars.

There is a nostalgia present which expresses itself as passion for knowing a thing fully, for knowing your own mistakes thoroughly-‘I think I have tricked/ myself’ (Captured By The Castle). These poems pursue the path of what happens when you are tricked and you go with it, when you are in love and it goes wrong. There are poems that open like a conversation you have been having with someone that you had forgotten and now you have picked it up again like a lost memory.

These poems are vehicles for hope, hope in a small and grand way, ‘I last two minutes and hope for dry knees’*, in the face of overwhelming emotion we are given a physical concentration of what grief does to you, dry knees are not the only things we hope for; they epitomise all that we hope.

‘I too am gas flame pained’ (Matisse)

Launch of Livid Among the Ghostings on Saturday 22nd at The Three Minute Theatre.
